Properties of light

The properties of light are: reflection, refraction, dispersion, diffraction.

How do mirrors reflect light?

Mirrors are very flat surfaces that reflect almost all the light. The virtual image that seems to be behind the mirror is of the same size of the object from where the rays come from. The distance between the object and the mirror is the same distance between the mirror and the virtual image. The most notable difference is that the virtual image is reversed.

What is a spectrum?

A band of colours, as seen in a rainbow, produced by separation of light by their different degrees of refraction.

Can light be bent?

Yes, light can be bent while reflection, refraction or polarization takes place.

Speed of light

Nothing is faster than the speed of light. It speeds through the vacuum of space at 186,400 miles (300,000 km) per second.

How do we see things?

Light travels in straight lines. When light hits an object, it is reflected (bounces off) and enters our eyes. This is how we see the object. Smooth, shiny surfaces such as mirrors and polished metals reflect light well. Dull and dark surfaces such as dark fabrics do not reflect light well.

How does light travel?

Light travels as a wave. But unlike sound waves or water waves, it does not need any matter or material to carry its energy along. This means that light can travel through a vacuum—a completely airless space.
